Should Scot Lee Cohen be forced to abdicate the Democrat lieutenant gubernatorial primary win after spending more than $2 million on his campaign? The much maligned lieutenant gov is feeling the pressure from fellow democrats and from newly elected gubernatorial candidate Patrick J. Quinn. Seems Mr. Cohen has a bit of a past that includes divorce, steroids and unpaid taxes. Says the New York Times:
“I was going through a divorce,” he said, “and I started running with a fast group. I was in a tumultuous relationship with the woman I was dating. We had a fight, but I never touched her.”
Mr. Cohen, who spent about $2 million of his own money on his campaign, defended his candidacy in unequivocal terms on a local public television news program late Thursday, but opened himself to new questions.
He said he had never been violent toward his ex-girlfriend, but he also admitted having behaved erratically while on steroids toward his ex-wife, who filed an order of protection against him in June 2005. Mr. Cohen admitted having had his ex-girlfriend “locked up” for damaging his apartment, and said her report to the police was in retaliation.
Mr. Cohen also admitted having had federal tax troubles.
When asked if his ex-girlfriend might have been a prostitute, as the local papers suggested, he said: “I never knew her as a prostitute. She was a massage therapist.”
Well, whatever. As if he’s all that unique in political circles these days. What politician these days is really all that clean when you get right down to it? The guy had some divorce issues and he behaved a bit erratically. So what?
